Thank you very much for your comprehensive answer.

I have discovered that the system is hydraulic not a cable, so I have dropped it off at a local garage and when I get the cost (porobably on Monday) I will make a decision whether or not to have the job done or scrap it.

I only purchased the car in May 08. I Got the cam belt replaced by Renault only for it to break about 8 weeks later and the radiator was replaced. For an initially cheap car it has cost me a fortune in repairs I will never buy a Renault again, it has been the worst car I have ever owned (in terms of reliability).

hi,this could be a number of thing's starting with the easiest first check cable has not snapped(if it has a cable)if its not the cable have a good look at the pedal these sometimes have a ratchet adjuster built-in to the pedal this can break, approx £10 for part from local auto parts shop if it's not one of these its will be the the thrust bearing if it is this you may aswell have a complete clutch as all the gearbox has to be removed.as i said earlier if it's got a cable.if it has not got a cable it can only be one of three thing's,firstly it could be the slave cylinder if it's external easy to do but can be expensive for part,if it's internal complete clutch, next possible thing is the tubing for the slave cylinder could have corroded & needs replacing & last of all the thrust bearing and again a complete clutch. hope this help's & best of luck
