Escort 1.8 D fuel woe?

The van had started to drive ok then loose power run ok and loose power regulary, somtimes nearly cutting out, so i have changed the fuel filter and now it will not start, i have tried priming it but that now doesnt seem to work it did before. it cranks over but does not fire up at all. it all seems air tight just no fuel it has plenty in tank and filter. Any Help would be appreciated and anyone who can explain the bag trick???

thanks ive now put a new primer on her and then used some easy start to get her going she wanted to fire but has at the moment not done so, i think now the starter motor has gone !!!! aswell blimey this car has very rarly let us down and now a load of dramas. I will try and bypass the starter just to get her going then see if the fuel is getting there.

check fuel pipes at back of engine- they sometimes rub together and put a small hole in them, also could be outlet pipe on tank sender may be rusted and porous and drawing in air! also hand primer on filter head - diaphragm can become porous [ quite common ].
