When I put the neddle in the holder and tighten it up the screw tightener moves the needle at an angle and it hits the plate breaking it.

Hello Janice,
There is a small piece or at least there should be of flat metal that fits inside the needl clampo to hold the needle in the correct position, it may have moved or it may not be there at all, you need to get it to a repair shop to check.
