How can I fix my 1999 Punto 1.9 diesel JTD ELX?

The problem is a lack of power when running cold. It has no problem starting in the cold, but I am left reaching for an imaginary choke to pull out for the first couple of miles. My experience of servicing/repair is all with petrol engines.

dont do as shaffick recommendes, plugs are fed 2 second initial 12v reducing as engine warms, a perminate 12v for longer than a few seconds, will result in 4 buggered glow plugs

try new glow plugs as a faulty one will not heat up the cylinder. you can test glow plugs with jump leads and a car battery. connect one end of the jump lead to the plug near the threads and the tip and the other end of the leads to the battery. this should cause the end of the plug to glow red. WARNING: THE GLOWING END IS ABSOLUTELY MOLTEN HOT SO TAKE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN TESTING.i would seek assistance when testing as it is a bit tricky. best of luck and be safe.
