i have a 1996 automatic and its not changeing gear it gos up the revs to ?

4000 befor changeing could someone please help me

Baldy. Draw up the dip stick from the gearbox. Run the fluid over the back of your hand. Does it smell like sugar. If it does, it means the clutch plates are burning out. (yes, even automatics have a clutch). It should be a bright red colour. If its a browny colour, the clutch plates are burned. Check the oil level of the fluid in the gearbox. Make sure it is at the correct level. This can only be done with the engine running and after going through the gears in order to circulate the fluid.
