A small pin holds the cable in place. It fits into a cantiliver system that expands and forces both shoes out at the same time.
To remove it you need to hold the end of the handbrake cable in place and knock the pin out with a punch. Easier said than done, as it is hard to get to. I had the benefit of needing to change the handbrake cable so I just snipped the end of the cable and then knocked the pin out with the handbrake cable end fixed in a vice.
