VW Golf driver's door lock broken?

Mk 4 Golf driver's door lock has broken and has meant that the door cannot be opened to get at the lock or the interior panel. Is there a trick to release the lock? Passenger door opens ok and central locking mechanism seems ok

I had this problem and tried to fix it. I wound down the window and pulled the inside panel of the door off at the top, be careful not to pull too hard. This givies you a bit of space to put a metal coat hanger down inside the door and hook onto to the brass coloured mechanism. After a couple of goes i managed to hook onto it and release the door.
However I have now got a load of other problems, lock bracket coming off, electrics failing etc.

My Father in law has the same problem, so I was thinking of purchasing the above.
