How can i fix my kenmore powermate vacuum cleaner?

I have a kenmore powermate vacuum. The vacuum shuts off when I remove the power head and connect any of the non-mechanical attachments.

Likely a problem in the swiveling part of the canister-end. Sometimes they break inside and have shorting problems.
