how to repair fiat punto 1224, model 2000 5 door 16 valves?

I have a Fiat Punto 16 valves 1224cc year 200
5 door.The power assisted sterring does not work and steering symbol stay lit on the dashboard all time.I can drive it,but feel like a tank.
What is the problem? is it a big job,can I do it or is a job for an expert?
