citroen xantia diesel?

got a problem starting my car in this really cold weather i do the normal thing ie let heater plug light go out but the car takes about 3to4 atempts to start by which time the battery is drained when the car eventually starts there is a lot of smoke from the exhaust any help would be much appreciated cheers

A new set of heater plugs normally sorts it also make sure the cold start is ajusted & working.The smoke you see is unburnt fuel.

are the glow plugs working?.although the heater glow plug light comes on inside the car, it doesn't mean they heat up.remove them one by one and test them if needed to prove they work.
