how to change a abs sensor?

The abs sensor on the o/s/f of my '99 megane is faulty i've bought a replacement, which renault assure me is the right one(looks different to the one i took off) but as the old sensor came apart i don't know if the metal cover is stuck in the hub or if the new one should fit into it? It won't!

I recently changed a front ABS sensor on my Sharan. It has a plastic casing that fits into a hole in the steel wheel hub area. I had to pull the driveshaft out of the hub so that I could drive the sensor out with a lump hammer!. I then spent five minutes with a large round file cleaning up the hole so that the new one would slot in. It sounds to me like you've left the casing in and you will HAVE to remove it before getting the new one in. Try driving a flat bladed screwdriver in between the casing and the side of the hole so that you can seperate them. Good luck
