How do I repair a hole in stretch leggings?

My son plays rugby & has a set of 'Skins' compression leggings. He's picked up a hole in them - what's the best way to repair it? I presume that ordinary thread won't work because it doesn't stretch in the same way as the rest of the material.

On the inside of the leggings place the hole over something to keep it strait then pick up loops , using tiny stitches, from alternate sides of the hole. ordinary thread will do fine.
