What does it mean when the oven goes POP, loudly?

I have a Baumatic oven and when using it the other day there was suddenly a loud POP and everything turned off (and it tripped the braker). I am thinking it could have been the element blowing but how can I check this before replacing it?

Visually check the element for any splits, cracks or holes. If any found it needs replacing. If none found the only thing left to do to make certain element is no good involves the use of a test meter on ohms range. Remove back of oven after shutting down all power to it. Locate the two ends of the element & remove the attached wires. Place one probe of meter on one end of element & other probe on the other end of element. No reading or a very tiny reading will indicate a blown element.
