check battery with meter when engine running....should read 14.6 volts or thereabouts to prove alternator is charing the battery. Anything considerably lower than that then replace battery or worse still get new alternator.

If the battery light comes on it means you are drawing more power from the battery than the alternator is putting back into it - not sustainable! Check the alternator belt isn't slipping (it usually screeches when cold if it is). If the tension on that is ok then it is either the battery on its last legs (quite likely if 4 or more years old) or the alternator itself (they usually last 75k miles). I think the engine management light is coming on in sympathy, sort out the charging/battery side of things and I think that light will stop shining as well as the battery light!
