VW Golf GTI 8V '96. Intermittent misfire problem?

Over the last few months my Golf has developed an intermittent misfire/ engine cut out problem. It orignally occured when I was cruising along at 66-70mph in 5th, but more recently it occurs when idle or around town. The car misfires for around a minute then seems to cure its self for about a week then it happens agin. My garage had it for a day, but could find no fault. Any ideas what it might be.

There are two fuel pumps on these one is a lift pump and the other is the main feed pump. The lift pump is in the tank and isn't too expensive to replace, it hardly ever gets checked and causes a misfire-like condition at higher speeds when you need more fuel than normal and in certain other conditions.

It could be a million things but when you've tried 999,999 don't forget this one!

Good luck

contact me to discuss, i have a golf m5 turbo, constantly miss-firing. took it to vw garage twice and they still couldnt find the problem. it stops for a while (usually when damp) and then starts again, no power.....no one can advise me of the issue and no one knows how to fix it....another issue, if you care to comment is the recro drivers seat no longer clicks into place, quite dangerous....mail me if you have any answers or comments sarah_j_hankin

Hi, I have a '99 vw golf 1.8 turbo. It's sort of doing the same thing it loses power when you drive and then also around town when waiting at the lights. You can hear the engine sound dropping as if it's going to die but then it comes right again. Whilst driving it loses power and shutters forward asif you are trying pull away in third gear for instance, like it does not have enough power to actually go. It's extremely intermittant and been at the machanics 4 times inthe last 45days and they cant seem to find anyting wrong with it. They say they have checed the O2 sensors, fuel line, fuel pump, intake hose, etc etc etc.... I am just so fed up with it... any ideas.

Could be the MAF sensor needs replacing or checking connections

Hi there, I have a 52 reg Golf that did the same thing, after about 3 months a mechanic had a solution which has so far worked.

Basically its an oil change, but the oil has to be as hot as possible. It and the filter was then changed for the best synthetic oil you can buy. It did it once just after, but has now been fine for 3 months (touch wood)
