I have tried venting and descaling but still no joy. I guess there is a safety feature which stops the pump from working as the pump works fine during descaling.

same here, Cann't empty it nor descaling it as the manual suggest if the light flashing fast (twice/sec). somehow it blocks the pump to work. I've waited an hour in case the machine has been block automatically after fail descaling/emptying, still nothing happened. I'm in indonesia, no nespresso agent around, the closest is in australia. Any clue?

By venting do you mean lifting the lever back for three seconds? Otherwise I've no ideas. Take it back.

Meanwhile, I can't make descaling mode work. It worked once a few months ago but now I can't get it to happen. Any ideas?
