my 96 p reg vauxhall vectra keeps overheating in traffic. The thermostat reads 100 (hot) in traffic but when belting down the motorway it goes back to cold.

Sounds like you have a dodgy thermostat or blocked pipes. Try flushing the coolant system and replacing the thermostat.
