the lettering has gone on my hob for switches?

how can i replace the lettering on my hob indicating which ring is which it's like a cross hair with a dot at the swtich for that ring,the wife has managed to remove them with mr muscle!!!

Hi!
This problem crops up time and time again! on older appliances the lettering etc used to be engraved and then backfilled with pigment polished level. However I now get no end of appliances where the lettering appears to be little better than screen printing or letraset! I have resorted to using a minicraft micro tool and stencil to engrave the lettering similar to the older methods, but appearance wise it's a poor substitute.
