Cooling fan running on after engine is switched off? 2003 Ford Fiesta Zetec?

The cooling fan has been running on after the engine has been switched off for the last week when the temperature is far to cold for it to be needed. Why would it come on in the first place and stay on as if the engine were really hot? The car was driven from cold 2 miles (not thrashed) and the fan stayed on for a minute or two after the engine was switched off, the engine certainly wasn't hot.

The coolant temp sensor has failed, it's a duel element one side goes to the engine ECU which controls the fan operation and the other does the instrument pod gauge, it's under the coil pack at the right end of the engine
