How do I fix the needle position mechanism on my sewing machine?

I have a Sears Kenmore Model 92 sewing machine that won't allow me to set the needle position. When I turn the control knob to any position (S, L, C or R) the needle and/or mechanism for the needle won't move. How can I fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I couldn't get ours to sew straight, no matter the selector position. A slider was just binding up and not dropping. Lubrication fixed the problem.
