Try cleaning the earth pin on the rear lamp unit multi-
plugs. The earth wire is brown and earths to the body on a small self tapping screw immediately below the lamp unit on the inside of the car,check for corrosion at the screw.

Right a Sierra answer to an Escort question. Well the light cluster on the rear may be standard on connections.

Similar to my past problem. I put the indicators on right hand turn and the back lights lite up like a disco with the warning light going 20 to the dozen. I found out from, would you believe, a Police officer who poined out the rear of the car was like a disco each I turned right. He said I've got one and it's the terminal block on the rear light cluster they get grubby short out and light up all lights and needs un plugging and cleaning, or simply buy a new terminal block and after marking which way round it goes and what wire goes to what light [Scotch clip them one and a time even though they are numbered. {stagger the clip positions}
Hope this proves useful.
