renault scenic 2004 1.5 dci. steering locked+steering not locked?

my car displays either steering locked ( it is not ) and steering not locked, and since this happened it will not start. I tried to bump it off but cuts out immediately. can anybody help please? Is it a fault with the steering lock or card reader? i have 2 cards, both showing the same info.
Any ideas on how much this will cost to get fixed?
Many thanks

This appears to be a very common fault with the 03/04 models. I had the same thing happen to me this week in which has cost me a whopping £478 for Renault to fix! After looking on the net I found that lots of owners have suffered this fault I therefore contacted Renault customer care to be informed that Renault are not aware of this fault and that their cars are known for reliability!! I think that the more people who contact them about this problem the more chance of them actually admitting liability. I feel that unlike other dealers such as Toyota, ford ect... Renault no longer actually rely on car sales to keep themselves in business as they seem to make even more on ripoff repairs to existing customers. I can honestly say that my car has cost me more in repairs than the car is worth. I'm collecting my car today and have decided that enough is enough! I'm part exchanging for a more reliable make.

hi. this problem can be a few things.it can be the steering box module located on the steering colum which needs changing or fuses f5d.9 or 19 if none of these then the fuse box is faulty (under bonnet next to battery)try cleaning the box connections or giving the wiring a wiggle.french tech!

Check fuse F5D (5 Amps) in the under-bonnet box beside the battery. That was the problem in my case.

just had this problem on my 04 scenic(steering locked steering unlocked.) wont start. No ones seems to know how to fix it. I read somewhere from a guy called stonybrook (i think) that there is a bright silver torx 30 bolt on steering colum which hols on the steering lock module (left hand thread. I took the two screws out of plastic cover under neath steering wheel. pulled apart cowling and undid bolt right handed. detached module and unpluged electrics. Went to renault and bought a new one( second hand is no good as it is programed to the car. A new one is plug and play and is reconised by ecu). extortion by renault £330 came home fitted it on with key away from vehicle, got key and put in dash
Started car 1 st time after it had been on my drive for a week with no one willing to look at it. My thanks to stonybrook who ever he is.

This is going to require a trip to Renault to have them put it on their diagnostic computer. it sounds like a faulty sensor on the steering column, but they will be able to confirm it.

Prepare yourself for a charge of around £75 for the honour of them telling you the problem.

What I would do is have a word with a mechanic round the back of the workshop, grab their attention and ask them if they know how to cure the problem. Alot of them fix cars at home and you may strike lucky and one of them will sort it out for you at home. It will save you paying Renault!
