I have a Maytag washer, model sav-4hd, purchased in 2005. I just smelled a burning smell and need to call for service. Is this an expensive repair in the works?

Probably. It is hard to say what is causing the burning smell without being there to look. However, most Maytag parts are expensive but that has to be balanced against the overall reliability of these machines. If this is the first major repair with this machine after 4 years of use then it is worth spending the money to fix.
