Hi Phill
I had a sim prob on my 1998 escort 1.8td
If the smoke is BLUE then you are burning oil from the turbo or head gasket area.
If the smoke is BLACK then this is the pump over fueling the injectors.
My problem was the fuel shut off solinoid on the pump.
It cost me almost £250 @ chepstow ford to get fixed.
