What caused my car to produce loads of white smoke and die?

My Rover 25 started chugging then blowing loads of white smoke and when I pulled over the engine would not stop and ths carried on for half hour and then if finally cut out. Breakdown got me home but did not look at what may have caused the problem as it was late and dark. Anyone have any idea what it could be as I will need to try to get it to a garage or callout.

Sounds like a head gasket. The engine in your car (K Series) is notorious for it. Sorry but the car is probably scrap because when the head gasket goes on a K Series it often takes the rest of the engine with it.
