Potterton profile hot radiators and no hot water ?

With my potterton I can have hot water if only the hot water is on - i cannot get heating if only the heating is on - i can get heating if the hot water and heating is on but the water is cold

motorised valve in airing cupboard is broken. needs replacing. its next to the pump usually.
