Every time I plug my 4gb flash drive into the usb socket and try to access it Avast antivirus says warning- a virus has been detected.I remove it to chest, and next time the same problem when I plug it in again. Also if I plug my finpix camera in it also tells me a virus has been detected! the same one.the virus description is Win32:confi[Wrm] 168kb
jwgkvsq.vmx F:\RECYCLER\S-5-3-42-2819952290-8240...
I have tried formatting the usb drive and erasing with EAST tech Eraser, but nothing gets rid of it, please help.

This is a very deadly worm, but removal is VERY simple and easy.

The Kido Worm (Recycler/autorun.inf) is a very serious network worm that quickly infects PCs on a network,and/or through use of USB devices. It interfaces with up to 500 servers and runs malware/DDoS processes using your PC/network, causing huge traffic demands (and subsequent) performance/workload slow downs. It also disables standard mounting of portable media (although this can be by-passed by using r-mouse/explore command).

NOTE: Linux and Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME operating systems can’t be infected with this network worm! This is impossible (unless you run it with Wine app). For these systems, simply mount and remove (delete) the "Recycler" folder (and its contents) and the autorun.inf file from any USB drives. The W95/98/ME immunity makes these operating systems a safe tool for cleaning USB drive sand (if the OS is capable of mounting the drives). Then use the tool below to disinfect the W2K or WXP system.

REMOVAL:

A special utility "KK.exe" (Kido Killer) should be used to remove this worm. You will find the FREE download and instructions on this KASPERSKY web site:

http://support.kaspersky.com/faq?chapter=207800963&print=true&qid=208279973

There is a lot of apocrypha here. Two answers actually refer you to sites for installing malware that supposedly removes this, but in actuality is far worse than this worm! When seeking advice on virus/worm infections, always weigh the messenger!

My Avast detected it but seems to have been successful in deleting it. I ran Avast in Safe Mode [press F8 when booting up].
I disengaged Autoplay in the USB drive [right-click, Properties], formatted it successfully, then Erased Unused Space for good measure [http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/].
Next, I shut off System Restore, rebooted, put it on again.
Seems to have worked for me. Hope this helps.
