Engine won't fire?

Replaced mag and spark plug, but engine still will not fire. How can I check new mag to make sure it is good. 2002 ohv for briggs and stratton. It is on a generator.

Check that the flywheel key has not sheared. They are alloy and this is a common problem. Make sure that the replacement key is also alloy.. NOT STEEL>

If it's brand new, then it's very very unlikely to be faulty. To be honest they hardly play up anyway, so I'd be suprised if there was something wrong with the old one.

Have you air gapped it correctly and have you actually removed the new plug to check for a spark?
