It is the element by the sounds of it. There are three elements - the grill, which you can see, one below the base plate and another behind the facia plate at the back of the oven. That's the one that's gone.
If it's the same as mine (just blown) then it's a circular element of three coils just screwed to the back with short screws. If, as I was, you are a bit careless disconnecting the wires, they can fall through the aperture. Then you need to pull the oven out and remove the back. Not difficult - six screws - but boring.
Now I'm trying to find a replacement element which is not easy. Electrical stores don't stock them because there are too many variations and website suggest the design has changed and needs additional fittings to install. Very tiresome, but essentially easy to remedy if you can get the bits.
