Can anyone tell me where I can get the best priced timing chain kit for the Nissan Micra K12 (1.2 ltr)?

Gary, July 2010
My Mica has done 25000 miles needs a new chain
was quoted from Nissan Garage £1770.00
Better to scrap it.

Having personally just done this job myself, I can confirm it isn't the easiest of tasks.

Plenty of sensors (it's a Nissan!) which need to be marked up on removal of wiring loom (unless your a micra genious), and hardly any space in the engine bay.

Easiest procedure is to remove the whole engine - which involves removing the exhaust, BOTH manifolds (not enough clearance to lift out otherwise), alternator, radiator, etc etc. Believe me, I tried it without removing these parts.

Total time to remove engine around 4 hours. It's definately a 10 hour job for most mechanics, although rushing it could get it done in 8.

Expecy to pay around £1200+ inc parts, although I managed to get the whole chain kit for around £200. I charged £600 all inclusive of new oil, filters, chains, etc - which isn't bad compared to other peoples prices - probably as I don't have a shiny showroom to upkeep!

Anyone needs the job doing - I'm in Sheffield. Zero 778866 zero 377

The timing chain does stretch on these engines...Nissan claims it is due to poor servicing (infrequent oil changes). If the timing chain stretches it throws out errors on the cam and crank position sensors and this causes the ECU to go into "limp home" mode. Only fix is to replace the chain...this is a major job and the book says 8.5 hours! The chain costs around £200 + gaskets and any other replacement parts found to be worn so you are looking at a bill of £1200+

The timing chain kits complete can be bought for around £150 if you're doing it yourself. Add 4 hours labour costs if you're getting a garage to do it.

it is a common fault and will need replacing along with all the guides. at nissan i believe it costs over £1000 the last one we did was just over £600 including vat if i remember rightly
hope this helps and sorry to be the bearer of bad news

David Phillips, February 2009
If it has stretched (which is common) it will need replacing I'm afraid.

I have no idea of the cost but would expect to pay a couple of hundred pounds. Just a guess though.
