programming a 306 key fob that didnt have a battery in it for a long time?

i have a 1999 v reg 306.the keyfob didnt have a battery in it when i bought the car. i have only just replaced the battery in the keyfob, and the key still doesnt work. can i still programme the key myself even thoguh there hasnt been a battery in the key for nearly 2 years?please help!

ive tried that but it still doesnt work.do i have to hold the button down fot longer because the battery has been out for a long time?or maybe ive just programmed it wrong?

The procedure for a 206 is
Switch off the ignition
Switch the ignition on again
Press locking button on remote
Switch off the ignition and remove the remote control key from the ignition lock. The remote control should now be working again.
The procedure may be the same for your 306 - check your owner's handbook.
