my cub cadet i1042 will start but the drive wont engage. any ideas?

Go to the back of the tractor and engage the to axel rods. These allow you to disengage the drive so you can push the mower around.

You need to push (or pull - I forget which) the little L-shaped levers at the bottom rear of the tractor... They will be on the left and right sides of the trailer hitch... They allow the tractor to be pushed in neutral when in one position... They allow the drive to engage in the other position.
