Selecting any of the wash cycles cause the dishwasher to start. There is a usual rumble but only a little water is pumped into the sprinkler. The detergent tablet holder releases but after that the dishwasher just stops. Moving the wash cycle programme forward manually causes the machine to empty but it never fills.
