how can I fix my oldish mountfield petrol driven lawn mower myself?

The self drive mechanism does not seem to be working and there is a rattle from the engine when it starts up even though it has oil. once warmed up the engine noise is ok but the self propelling operation only works very intermittently but with no real power when it does. is the machine knacked??

yOU WILL NEED TO PULL THE COVER ON FRONT OF MOWER AND INSPECT ..BELT MIGHT JUST NEED TO BE REPLACED.....WHILE ENGAGING DRIVE LOOK AT THE DRIVE AND SEE WHATS WRONG WITH IT
