The cold water fills slowly, then the machine beeps wanting hot water. I keep having to push the button back to cold so it can keep filling (as I don't use hot water).

If cold water is filling slowly checked first that the filters on either end of inlet hose are not blocked. Also check the filter inside the inlet valve, it can be seen through the opening where you screw the hose onto the machine. If all ok and water still slow, change the inet valve for a new one. They often fail to open fully.
