my machine will do the wash cycle, then when it goes onto the rinse or spin cycle it cuts power and I have to leave it for about 5 minutes before l have power to start it again.

You haven't said what model number it is. Most important. Look on the label at rear of machine. If it is a GW709 then the problem is most likely to be the drain pump overheating. Check to see if it is blocked or tight to turn. If not & it overheats you will need to get a new pump.
