Engine cuts out at junctions or traffic lights?

I have a BMW 3 Series E46 320i SE Saloon.
Every now and then after engine has warmed up to temperature and having travelled for a bit, come to a halt at say lights or junction the engine cuts out. Embarassing. Also after starting up again exceleration goes for a while till speeded up.
