The rear bearing on my Hotpoint vdt60p is making a grating sound. ?

The rear bearing on my Hotpoint vdt60p is making a grating sound. When I press the cover the grating sound stops. Does it need greasing / replacing. There seems to be a lot of metal filings when I remove the bearing cover.
