I have a p reg fiesta with the same problem, does anyone know if it is possible to swap the lock from the passendger side to driver side

andrew, September 2010
if it wont unlock from the inside or out, then you have a broken return spring, shit bust, i had the same prob, if the central locking keeps cycling when the driver/passenger door is open depending on which door has the problem, then it's definately the return spring, mine had broke in half so i made one out of that, works a treat

outside handle on the passenger door of a 96 fiesta does not operate the lock is it just the connecting rod to the lock?

If the spring is missing try looking in door well as its common to fall off, if that fails look in you junk and old stuffs in shed for something close to the spring and brnd it intoo shape. i did this with my zetec si p reg yesterday, phoned ford for a quote on lock latch 52.56 inc vat this fix was free :) big smile ..just try ppl and think a little and save them pounds ....GL with you work hope this helped..

where can I get a handbook for Fiesta 1.3 P reg. 1997

Kate Slack, September 2006
Take it to your local Locksmith who deals with Tibbe locks. These can be repaired at a fraction of the Main dealer prices.

NOTHING to do with keys at all. The problem is because the actual door latch mechanism inside the door has a return spring missing or broken. A new door catch mechanism needs to be purchased from a Ford dealer for around £45. When the return spring breaks the door will lock only making unlocking very difficult if not impossible.

the key COULD still be the source of the concern. All ford tibbe type keys suffer from wear even if they look good! I would suggest getting a new/ latest spec key cut by your FORD dealer to the correct key number, please ask them to cut it carefully as the depth of each cut is CRITICAL and some parts men dont care! It may be worth asking the service advisor to look at it and confirming the key number with him...Try it it may work. Having said that you have a problem...the car will not start with the new key..... the new key must be programmed to the passive anti theft system, ok if you have the master RED key(procedure in owners handbook) if not it will need to programmed using the FORD diagnostic equipment........expensive! MAIN DEALER ONLY. If that fails you will need to buy a lock barrel overhaul kit from your storeman that cut the key. The service department can build it to the key number and its relatively easy to fit by anyone with a few tools and some common sense, door trim off, inner membrane pulled down (unbroken), secrity cover removed, barrel removed, fit new barrel and reassemble in reverse order....... job done.
