How can I replace the compressor in my Roper refrigerator?

My Roper refrigerator is no longer under warranty (of course!) and the compressor has gone out. The fan still blows, but, no cooling in either the fridge or freezer. The unit is only about 5 years old.

As a newly single parent, I can't afford to pay a repair charge and I certainly can't afford to run out and buy a new unit.

Is this something I can manage myself with a diagram/instructions? I'm pretty handy, having recently rebuilt my hot water heater. :)

Any suggestions/help would be appreciated. Thanks!

No show at all of doing it yourself. Once a new compressor is installed the next step is to pump the gas back in to the compressor & pipes. Unless you have a gas cylinder & pressure gauges etc you can't do it. Is the motor still running when turned on? If so, then it may of just lost the gas & needs a service company to come & regas it for you. Much cheaper than replacing the compressor as well. If motor is running, then turn it off until it has been gassed. The motor will overheat & then you will have to replace the motor as well.
