just been told I need to have a coil spring replaced ,but they told me its best to have them both done, as one is not complete, its that true.

Remove front wheels.
Undo bolt that clamps hub to shock absorber.
Hit hub with hammer down until off of the shock absorber.
Undo brake hose securing clip from shock absorber if fitted.
Undo anti roll bar drop link from shock absorber if fitted.
Now undo nut on top of the shock absorber inside the cup to remove from car.
Clamps will be required to take tension off of spring before spring retaining cap can be removed.
Remove spring retaining cap. (maybe a nut that holds it down or a circle clip).
Refit in reverse order.
Isn't there a chance of getting it done free of charge if parts are under warranty.

You would need a special tool to compress the new spring before replacing maybe you could borrow one - unless you know what you really are doing far better take it to a small garage as you will save a fortune on labour compared to main dealers
