WHY IS MY HOUSE ALARM CONTROL BOX GETTING HOT?

HI MY ALARM CONTROL BOX WHICH IS UNDER THE STAIRS IS GETTING HOT AND SMALLING IS THIS OK
DEAN, February 2009
Phoned fire brigade. They said to turn off electric to alarm. Just sitting at 2.00 am . They sId alarm would go off in 15 minutes. It has! Few hope neighbours speak to us tomorrow? Box has cooled in the 15 minutes. Will try changing the battery in morning otherwise engineer call out required !

Make sure you disconnect the battery immediately, you're risking a fire otherwise.

Who is this patronising John character who does nothing but make himself out to be the oracle of security systems on these posts?? Plenty of us security engineers on here you know John!!

Dave the alarm engineer, February 2009
Well done Acorn good advice, the battery is probably knackered, thus drawing excessive current from the panel. Making the panel hot. More expensive panels like the newer scantronic panels have battery monitor circuit's which create a fault on the panel when the battery fails.

John, February 2009
Please don't SHOUT, it's unnecessary.

At the very least the battery in the control panel is faulty, open the box and disconnect it, sooner rather than later.

'Hot and smelling' - It's either the battery or the charging circuit at fault, which ever, disconnection of the battery is the first thing to do.

I then suggest a qualified alarm engineer is in order.
