HI John, if you get a good auto spark he can by pass the immobiliser, these hdis give a heap of trouble, the ignition switch gives bother, they sometimes wont start, and some times wont switch off the engine, they give injector problems also, and the primary fuel pump which is in the tank fails often, I sold mine today thank god, never again, my altenator also failed, and in very wet conditions, the engine sucked in a lot of water and nearly wrecked the engine, anyway thats some of the faults that was in my year 2000 306 HDI, Good luck with yours.

Hi John, P1517 is "Alarm/central conrol module programming" cause's wiring, incorrectly programmed or "immobilizer system malfunction" cause's incorrect/damaged key, incorrectly programmed, wiring, immobilizer read coil
I am supprised the RAC man could not get you going as they are supposed to have all the latest diagnostic kit!! try the yellow pages for an auto-electrician as they should be able to help and cheaper than the main dealer!!
