Our Proline fridge/freezer only functions on maximum setting?

During the recent cold spell we were on holiday, and on return found that our fridge/freezer that is kept in the garden shed stopped functioning.

However, if the rotary switch inside thefridge section is turned to the maximum setting of 7 then it starts to function, but the temperature gets so low that it starts to freeze items in the fridge.

If you lower the rotary switch setting, then it seems as if it never comes on again, including the door light.

I have tried replacing the thermostat, but that did not make any difference.

Please help !

My proline TFP135B fridge freezer just started to develop problems, after 5 years. Once the Fridge clicks on its one for several hours - all it fine. The freezer goes does to betwee -20 to -30 and the fridge bit is about 5. When it "clicks" off it is now staying off for about 3-4 hours - by this time the fridge goes up to abut 10 oC and the freezer to 0oC!. If I turn it up to 7 then the fridge at the top of the fridge section develops so much ice of the back. I know nothing about electics so will not even try to replace a thermostate, if is that, wouldn't have a clue. Would turning it off for several days help - could melt anything at the back - although would i have to put some kind of very thin tray at the back to catch any ice melting???? or is just just by a new one - not Proline and not Hotpoint (heard a lot of bad stuff about Hotpoint)

First remove all perishable / frozen items & store if poss in a neighbours or family members fridgefreezer.
Turn the dial to correct setting, normally 3-4 and leave fridge door open for around an hour. Any ice collecting on back of fridge area will disappear. Let fridge go from freezing to normal temperature. Close door and wait. In around another 1-2 hrs frideg should start as it cools to fridge temperature.
If the problem persits, take ALL food from unit & turn off at socket. Leave off for 24hrs. Allow gas & coolants in unit to settle. Plug back in & cross fingers.
If all this fails try a skip...

WELL i came here looking for answers and it looks like everyone has similar problems. The bottom of ours fills with water and there is a lot of heat between the Fridge and freezer doors. The "don't buy again " solution gets my vote!

Sounds like a compressor problem. We have also had a problem with our fridge/freezer in that although it is defrosting automatically, the water is not going down the hole in the back of the interior of the fridge, but just laying there. Nothing seems to clear it, so the bottom of the fridge compartment is continually wet. Will never again buy one of these crap Proline products.Seem good value to buy,but no solutions to problems afterwards. A total waste of money.

I have exactly the same problem. The Comet engineer came and fitted a new thermostat on Saturday. The problem is still there. Can this be a design fault?
