how can tell if the timer on my washing machine is working?

Yesterday, my washing machine just keep filling up with water and never stop until i unpluged it. It happened to overflow, getting water everywhere. So i think that the timer might be faulty!! Does any one have ne suggestions.

check for the pressure switch. its more likely this is blocked rather than the timer. the timer rund programs, but needs signals from other components before it continutes. the pressure switch is one of these components. there will be a small diameter tube running from near the bottom of the drum up to a box. take the hose off the box and blow down through it hard. DO NOT blow hard up the other end from the drum to the switch as this will very probably damage the switch.
