if you turn trimmer upside down with the engine running, so that the spool is facing the sky, does the spool start to spin? I have this problem also and don't know how to fix it

The flexable shaft that runs down the to the spool do tend to break. They have a square on the ends that engage squares in the spool and engine. I'm not aware of any grass trimmers that have clutches. I've never seen on come into my shop anyway. There may be a gear head.
