Has my element gone or is it something else?

My 4 slice Dualit toaster recently caused all the electrics in my house to short out. When I flicked the trip switch back on and turned on the toaster again, it banged, there was a spark, then nothing (and I unplugged it!).
Is this likely to be remedied by replacing a faulty element(s) or could it be something more serious?
It's about 7 or 8 years old.
Thanks.

Hi
I had the same problem with my two slice toaster - Dualit when it was a year or so old . It went back to Dualit via John Lewis. After about three weeks I followed up Dualit and they said they could not find a problem and would retest it. They did suggest that it may be a problem with the trip system in the house. I pointed out that the house was new and that the toaster had worked fine for many months. In the end they replaced it without charge.
