Fiat Punto losing water from the expansion tank?

Hi There

Can anyone help? My Fiat Punto has been losing a lot of water from the expansion tank the last 2 weeks and now having to fill up every 2 days. When stationery the temperature gauge goes through the roof. The thermostat was replaced back in the summer. Tonight the temperature gauge went off the scale and when I took off the pressure cap dirty water started overflowing from the ex. tank. We replaced 2 core plugs a while ago believing that was causing the water loss but obviously not. The car is a sporting 98 S reg 1.2 16v with 115k.

sounds a bit like you need to back flush the cooling system due to a blockage / severe restriction. ie the water circulates in one direction around the cooling system, so disconnect and remove the thermosat. Disconnect a suitable cooling hose and blast the complete system with a garden / water hose and be amased at the gunge that comes out. Make sure the car interior heater si turned up high (hot). Also check that your radiater is not blocked by 'road kill' plastic bags etc. Make sure you replace the coolant WITH anti freeze, replace the thermostat, and tighten up hoses and connections - not too tight...

Sounds like head gasket failure
