what is the problem with my ford escort 55 (n reg).i cannot get it in gear ?

when the clutch goes down i cannot get the ven into a forward gear, reverse makes a grinding noise, goes into gear but with a clunk and a jolt that shakes the van. if i turn off ignition ,i can put it in first gear no problem.

clutch not clearing-could be operating arm broken, clutch ratchet slipping, clutch quadrant broken [adjustable type], release fork notpushing bearing square to cover. [fork fractured, roll pins broken],could also be clutch plate spring broken and stuck between cover/plate/flywheel. reason for grating in rev is its not syncrho whereas forward gears are thats why they wont engage!
