Why would my N reg vauxhall corsa 1.4 engine overheat?

Just recently my N reg vauxhall corsa 1.4 engine has overheated, but the fan seems to be cutting in and out correctly, and there doesn't seem to be any visible water leaks. So please can anyone help me by suggetsing other reasons for my engine to have overheated.

Bet the coolant has never been changed in the 15 years since your car was made. I had this with my old M reg Corsa. Drained the old coolant out, flushed it with a garden hose to remove as much gunge from the radiator and engine block as I could, then refilled with the correct mix of the specified coolant. Cured my problem because my thermostat wasn't stuck closed.

If your fan operates when the engine gets hot, and your not loosing and fluid from the system, your thermostat is not opening as it should do when the engine reaches the correct temperature and is probable stuck closed.
